WS: how and when was curly girl born?
CG: When: Curly Girl Design was born in 2003, well, technically a little before that, but I got serious in 2003. How: Well, when illustration and writing REALLLLLY love each other…. just kidding.
I was an art director in advertising and marketing for a bunch of years and kept getting laid off from my jobs (dot com bubble, then 9/11) in between jobs I knew that to stay employable, I had to stay creative, so I was making these collage art cards and postcards for friends and family.
Later, when I took a job running a yoga studio in Boston, I showed the pieces to my boss and she asked me to make some for the studio bathrooms…I did, and people started buying prints of them off the walls…. soon, I lost another job when my boss at the studio (lovingly) fired me, because she said I should be doing my art full time. After a couple of years doing the starving artist thing…. we started to get noticed. I have been doing Curly Girl full time since 2005.
WS: favorite throwback hairstyle?
CG: The Afro, naturally.
WS: flats or heels?
CG: Both. never at the same time. Sneakers should not have a heel.
WS: what music can we expect to hear if we snuck up on you in the studio?
CG: Ha! Could be a little bit of anything, but expect to find me singing.
